No city inspires real estate envy like New York City. And no wonder, with our million-dollar skyline views and amenities galore. But just how expensive are the costliest neighborhoods? You might be surprised by the answer
January 27, 2015, Emily Nonko
It’s hard to shock a New Yorker with dollar signs — after all, NYC has among the priciest real estate in the world. We decided to investigate, so we turned to PropertyShark. They crunched the numbers, looking at all median sales in 2014 for one- to three-family homes, condos and co-ops, to find out just what “expensive” looks like in one of the most expensive cities on the planet. The answer? Very. The average prices in the poshest neighborhoods hover around $2 million, dipping to just below $1 million in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Of course, those are just the median prices. The sky’s the limit on the priciest properties — in January 2015, New York City witnessed the most expensive condo sale in its history: $100.5 million at One57 in Midtown. So, what draws buyers to the city’s costliest neighborhoods? Everything from quaint streets dotted with boutiques and cast-iron lofts (SoHo and Tribeca) to jaw-dropping views (Midtown) to easy access to the world’s best restaurants (West Village). There’s no question that these neighborhoods all have their special allure, but are they worth the $2 million dollar price tag to live here? That’s up to you.
