  6. Hong Kong school took out an ad in a paper last week offering Lam Yat-yan, a tutor, $11 million (£7.1 million) to quit his job and work for them.

Modern Education's attempt to poach Lam away from rival school Beacon Group illustrates the growing trend for what are dubbed 'super tutors' in the super crowded city, according to the Financial Times.

In Hong Kong, where competition is fierce for places at top universities, and parents spend huge amounts of both time and money ensuring that their kids get into the best colleges, tutors like Lam are revered in the same way as celebrities. Go to the city, and you can see their faces daubed all over billboards and in TV ads.

  9. 8 Most Expensive Neighborhoods in New York City

No city inspires real estate envy like New York City. And no wonder, with our million-dollar skyline views and amenities galore. But just how expensive are the costliest neighborhoods? You might be surprised by the answer

    January 27, 2015, Emily Nonko

It’s hard to shock a New Yorker with dollar signs — after all, NYC has among the priciest real estate in the world. We decided to investigate, so we turned to PropertyShark. They crunched the numbers, looking at all median sales in 2014 for one- to three-family homes, condos and co-ops, to find out just what “expensive” looks like in one of the most expensive cities on the planet. The answer? Very. The average prices in the poshest neighborhoods hover around $2 million, dipping to just below $1 million in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Of course, those are just the median prices. The sky’s the limit on the priciest properties — in January 2015, New York City witnessed the most expensive condo sale in its history: $100.5 million at One57 in Midtown. So, what draws buyers to the city’s costliest neighborhoods? Everything from quaint streets dotted with boutiques and cast-iron lofts (SoHo and Tribeca) to jaw-dropping views (Midtown) to easy access to the world’s best restaurants (West Village). There’s no question that these neighborhoods all have their special allure, but are they worth the $2 million dollar price tag to live here? That’s up to you.

Known for its stately brownstones and its namesake park, Fort Greene is ever evolving and is now at the heart of the booming Brooklyn Cultural District. The neighborhood’s western edge also abuts Downtown Brooklyn, where a forest of mixed-use towers and high-end rentals have been built in recent years. To the south, Atlantic Yards has brought the Barclay Center, which has helped turn the area into a sports hub as well. Fort Greene Park, designed by Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted, has served as the traditional socioeconomic divide of the area, with townhouses to the south and public housing developments to the north.

Fort Greene has been multiracial, with a significant African-American population, since the 19th century. By the 1970s most of the area’s homes were owned by middle-income blacks. The filmmaker Spike Lee, who grew up in Fort Greene, brought new attention to the area when he established his production company, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, here in the 1980s. He stirred debate about the gentrification of Brooklyn neighborhoods recently when he criticized developers who venture into

AROUND $3.4 MILLION (3 MILLION EUROS)

This second-floor apartment is in a 1912 building designed by the architect Albert Sélonier in a transitional Art Nouveau style, blending the parquet floors, high ceilings and traditional moldings of the Haussmann era with geometric design elements that were forward-looking for the time. The décor is by Kara Molinari, an interior designer, and features bespoke carpets and artwork. The furnishings in the 2,940-square-foot space will be negotiable as part of the sale. A spacious terrace shaded by an awning overlooks an interior courtyard.

“My idea was to bring the flat into the 21st century with classic style,” Ms. Molinari said. The focal point of the apartment is a traditional entry hall, with large paned doors opening into various rooms. Walls and woodwork in shades of dark blue are set against a gilt-framed mirror, a leopard-print rug and a settee upholstered in gold fabric.
